uClinux - Embedded Linux Microcontroller

The original uClinux was a derivative of Linux 2.0 kernel intended for microcontrollers without Memory Management Units (MMUs). However, the Linux/Microcontroller Project has grown both in brand recognition and coverage of processor architectures

Today's uClinux as an operating system includes Linux kernel releases for 2.0 2.4 and 2.6 as well as a collection of user applications, libraries and tool chains.

The Linux/Microcontroller project is a port of Linux to systems without a Memory Management Unit (MMU).

Pronounced "you-see-linux", the name uClinux comes from combining the greek letter "mu" and the english capital "C". "Mu" stands for "micro", and the "C" is for "controller". uClinux first ported to the Motorola MC68328: DragonBall Integrated Microprocessor.

The first target system to successfully boot is the PalmPilot using a TRG SuperPilot Board with a custom boot-loader created specifically for our Linux/PalmPilot port.

The module has been tested with a port of RTLinux 0.9J. A copy of an early oscilloscope tracing can be found on the uCsimm Real-time port page

To communicate with a microcontroller experimentation board via the serial interface, MC-51 provides a terminal mode. The required parameters for the connection can be adjusted using the main menu. The microcontroller needs to be programmed with an appropriate monitor program (e.g. PAULMON)..

The simulator lets you test small programs without any external hardware. It contains all common debugging features (Run, Stop, Single step, Step over subroutine, Run to selected line). You can execute the program step-by-step or set breakpoints anywhere in the program.

The simulator displays the source code with program labels as well as the compiled hex code and the program addresses. All registers and memory locations can be inspected and changed if desired. Numbers may be displayed as hex, decimal or binary values.

The Intel MCS-51 (commonly referred to as 8051) is a Harvard architecture, CISC instruction set, single chip microcontroller (µC) series which was developed by Intel in 1980 for use in embedded systems.



Intel's original MCS-51 family was developed using NMOS technology, but later versions, identified by a letter C in their name (e.g., 80C51) used CMOS technology and consume less power than their NMOS predecessors. This made them more suitable for battery-powered devices.

A Tutorial on Binary Numbers

Computers understand numbers and logic, as most are digital computers. The Binary Hexadecimal System is the way the numbers or logical commands are instructed to the computer. All input devices or sensors must finally talk this language to the CPU, and all outputs and actuators must be able to understand this numbers to do their job.

A bimetallic thermostat is like a simple mechanical computer. Where the bimetal response is the sensor input, the contacts are the output to actuator and the bimetal thermal behavior is of the nature of intelligence. Similarly we have opamps which can be real-time complex analog computers. And the Living Being are like biologicals robot which have all the things - a control systems, computers, sensors and actuators, even probably a wireless network. :-)

Binary Numbers
  • Bit is 0 or 1 ... one digit ... 0 could be 0 volts and 1 five volts.
  • Nibble is four bits, 4 digits, like 0010 , in hex a nibble is 0 to F.
  • Byte is eight bits, 8 digits, like 1100 0010 , in hex 00 to FF.
  • BCD binary coded decimal is binary code for numbers 0 to 9.
