1-Wire Temperature Control

This free project was designed to measure and control temperature in the range of - 55°C to +125°C with 0.1°C accuracy. It is based on the popular PIC16F628A microcontroller of Microchip.

1-Wire Temperature Control

The microcontroller uses the 1-Wire protocol ( sometimes known as a MicroLAN ) to communicate with a DS18B20 digital thermometer and a DS2405 addressable switch. The 1-Wire bus requires only one data line (and ground) for communication with a central microprocessor .

The interface application is designed to provide a friendly and flexible interface to the controller. It allows the controller settings to be read and written, and the process temperature to be monitored.

The 8-Bit CMOS microcontroller of Microchip PIC16F628A continuously reads the process temperature ( PVar ) from the DS18B20 sensor and depending on the desired temperature setpoint ( SPoint ) value of the process, manipulates the DS2405 addressable switch,using ON-OFF control algorithm

The following is my Computer Science project Comp490 and Comp492 in progress. It is a SUMO robot for our local RoboWar tournament. I have been, for the pass two years a participant of the annual RoboWar competition. So, this year I've decided to try to get credit for doing it.

"I was fortunate enough to find a professor who was willing to supervise my project Dr.Ferhat Khendek. I have decided to do the documentation in HTML format and make it public to anyone who is interested in robotics."

There are two class of robots, remote controlled and autonomous. Remote controlled are operated by a human participant via RF link. Autonomous on the other hand has to be self contained with no human influence in its operations with the exception to its programming.

Based on the above the Octagon computes a sensible heating/cooling current value and transmits a corresponding analogue signal to the current control electronics in the TC-box.
The current control electronics control the current provided by a big external power supply flowing through the peltier heating elements according to the signal received from the Octagon.

This is a project that will help students learn both hardware and software aspects of a control system. Here you can test out an automation program on a PC with minimum external hardware.

When you implement in the field, the system has to be a dedicated real time uC based product on custom firmware. Systems with OS + Software combination are not known to be reliable in Process Control. But OS + Software is good for Supervisory Systems which get their data from Real Time Controllers.

So a front end controller must be Rugged, Non-PC based and Non-OS based unit. This means use something like a SBC. With a Robust and Compact (means fast) firmware.

The firmware should be Polling or Interrupt based but with both internal and external watchdog. Most important a Power supply Management that resets system properly over Brown-outs and Black-outs. Even today some Embedded Systems i have to turn off and on after power resumes.

Don't Forget, Multiple Watch Dogs and Multiple Power Management for graceful start of system !! Use one big SuperCap if you want. Else people will go back to Thermostats.
